Today, March 26, Noelia Castillo Ramos, 25, became the first person in Spain to receive euthanasia approved on the grounds of depression and psychological suffering, following years of legal battles that reached the European Court of Human Rights.
Noelia was gang raped in 2022 while living in a state-supervised care centre in Barcelona. The trauma left her with severe depression. A suicide attempt that followed left her paraplegic, living with chronic pain and total dependency on others for daily care. She formally applied for euthanasia in 2024. Her father opposed the decision and fought it through the courts for nearly two years – losing at every level, including Spain’s Supreme Court, Constitutional Court, and the ECHR, which dismissed his final appeal on March 24.
In her final interview on Spanish television, she said: “I want to leave now and stop suffering – full stop. The happiness of a father cannot be above the happiness of a daughter.”
Her mother disagreed with the decision but stayed by her side. Her father did not.
